Occupational Exposures during Aluminium Production

چکیده
Aluminium, the third most abundant element in the earth’s crust, occurs in nature in combination with silicon and oxygen (i.e. as aluminium silicate). When subject to tropical weathering, aluminium silicate may react to form aluminium hydroxide. Rock containing high concentrations of aluminium hydroxide is called bauxite. This rock is the usual starting material for the production of aluminium. Metallurgical-grade alumina (Al2O3) extracted from bauxite by the Bayer process is generally referred to as the ore (Sanders, 2002). 1.2 Manufacturing processes

Ultrafine Particle (UFP) Exposures in an Aluminium Smelter: Soderberg vs. Prebake Potrooms
The objectives of this work were to evaluate ultrafine particle (UFP) exposures during aluminium smelting in Soderberg and prebake potrooms. Particle concentrations were monitored using the P-Trak 8525 and aerosol particle size distributions were monitored with the electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI). UFP samples were analyzed for chemical composition by transmission electron microscopy (TE...
متن کاملElemental analysis of inorganic dusts in lung tissues of interstitial pneumonias.
People have the opportunity to inhale inorganic dusts under various environments. Inorganic dust exposures as a result of occupational exposure may induce or modulate pulmonary fibrosis. We analyzed the deposition of elements in lung tissues of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and compared element deposition with chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (chronic HP) and collagen va...
متن کاملEffects on the nervous system in different groups of workers exposed to aluminium.
OBJECTIVE To investigate possible neurotoxic effects in groups of aluminium pot room and foundry workers, aluminium welders, and a small group of workers exposed to aluminium in the production of flake powder. METHODS Exposure to aluminium was evaluated with aluminium concentrations in blood and urine as well as a questionnaire. The groups exposed to aluminium were compared with a group of mi...

We reviewed specific chemical exposures and exposure assessment methods relating to published and unpublished epidemiological studies in the alumina and primary aluminium industry. Our focus was to review limitations in the current literature and make recommendations for future research. Although some of the exposures in the smelting of aluminium have been well characterised, particularly in po...
متن کاملMineralogical analysis of the respiratory tract in aluminium oxide-exposed workers.
A retrospective study was conducted in order to characterize the retention of fibrous and nonfibrous mineral particles in the respiratory tract in subjects with previous occupational exposure in the aluminium industry. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid (three samples) or lung parenchyma (two samples) were studied using analytical transmission electron microscopy in five patients. A high concen...
